In this alum-led talk, Jan King reflects on the words of John O’Donohue quoted at the end of her ordination speech in 2022 and how the surprising rhythm of the river continues to shape her unscripted life and ministry. Jan will also share how her journey on the path of Universal Sufism has made room for a balance of activity and repose, for the practice of silence, and a spaciousness to follow her unique path as she lives and serves.
About Jan
Jan is a 2022 ChIME graduate and considers herself a hearth, neighborhood and community chaplain, encountering friends, family, neighbors and wider community with compassion, calm presence, and deep listening. More formally, she has offered Spiritual Conversation Circles at the Osher Lifetime Learning Institute at USM and at her West End Neighborhood Association in Portland. As a consultant with the former Spiritual Care Services of Maine, she served as a chaplain in Lewiston following the tragic shooting and met with members at the Equality Community Center in Portland. Her own spiritual practice is rooted in Universal Sufism, the Twelve Steps and Nature. She co-facilitates the second-year classes on Universal Sufism at ChIME, provides spiritual companionship to a student and serves on the Board of Trustees.
